Professional Sand Filter Media Replacement
Is your water cloudy even though the chemicals are balanced? If your sand filter is over 5 years old, the sand inside has likely worn out. Over time, the sharp edges of the sand grains become smooth and round, losing their ability to trap dirt. Worse, the sand can calcify into hard clumps ("channeling"), allowing dirty water to pass right through the filter without being cleaned.
Why You Need This Service
Changing the sand is the single most effective way to restore water clarity and improve flow rate in an older system.
-
Restore Water Clarity: New sand has sharp edges that catch fine debris, algae, and silt that old sand misses.
-
Lower System Pressure: Old, clogged sand creates high pressure in the tank, straining your pump. New sand allows water to flow freely.
-
Save on Chemicals: When your filter works efficiently, you use fewer chemicals to keep the water clear.
The "Don't Do It Yourself" Warning
Changing sand is widely considered the worst job in pool maintenance. Here is why you should let Blue Bottom Pools handle it:
-
It’s Heavy: A standard filter holds 200–600 lbs of wet, heavy sand. We scoop it out by hand or use specialized extraction vacuums.
-
The "Lateral" Risk: Buried at the bottom of the tank are fragile plastic parts called "laterals." If you break one while digging, sand will shoot into your pool every time you run the pump. We know how to navigate these delicate parts safely.
-
The Mess: We bag the old sludge and sand for easy disposal, so you aren't left with a pile of mud on your lawn.
Our Sand Change Process
-
Extraction: We drain the tank and carefully remove the old, contaminated media.
-
Internal Inspection: Once empty, we inspect the standpipe and laterals for cracks or damage. (If parts are broken, we can replace them while the tank is open).
-
Sanitization: We rinse the interior of the tank to remove algae or sludge buildup.
-
Refill: We add the precise amount of #20 Silica Pool Sand (and pea gravel if required by manufacturer specs).
-
Backwash & Rinse: We perform the initial backwash to remove dust from the new sand before turning the system back to "Filter" mode.
When Should You Change Your Sand?
-
Every 3–5 Years: For standard residential pools.
-
Immediately: If you see sand blowing into the pool through the return jets (this usually indicates a broken lateral).
