Filter Sand Change
Is your water cloudy even though your chemicals are perfectly balanced? If your sand filter is over 5 years old, the sand itself is likely the problem. Over time the sharp edges that trap debris wear smooth — and the sand can harden into clumps that let dirty water pass straight through without being filtered at all.
Persistent Cloudy Water
Worn-down sand grains can no longer trap fine debris and algae — no matter how much you backwash, the water stays dull and hazy.
High Filter Pressure
Calcified, clogged sand restricts water flow and spikes your system pressure — putting unnecessary strain on your pump and shortening its lifespan.
Burning Through Chemicals
When your filter isn't doing its job, your chemicals have to work twice as hard. New sand reduces chemical consumption and saves you money all season.
Channeling
Old sand compacts into hard channels that allow dirty water to bypass filtration entirely — giving you the illusion of a running filter with none of the benefit.
It's brutally heavy. A standard filter holds 200–600 lbs of wet, compacted sand. We scoop it out by hand or use specialized extraction equipment — this is not a one-person weekend job.
The laterals. Buried at the bottom of the tank are fragile plastic parts called laterals. Break one while digging and sand will blast into your pool every time the pump runs. We navigate these carefully — every single time.
The mess. Old sand is saturated with sludge and algae. We bag and remove it entirely — you won't be left with a pile of mud slowly sinking into your lawn.
Extraction
We drain the tank and carefully remove all old, contaminated media — by hand or with specialized extraction equipment depending on filter size.
Internal Inspection
With the tank empty, we inspect the standpipe and laterals for cracks or damage. If anything is broken, we can replace it on the spot while the tank is already open.
Tank Sanitization
The interior of the tank is rinsed to clear out any residual algae or sludge buildup before fresh media goes in.
Refill with Fresh Media
We add the precise amount of #20 Silica Pool Sand — plus pea gravel if required by your manufacturer's specifications.
Backwash & Return to Service
We perform the initial backwash and rinse cycle to flush dust from the new sand, then return the system to Filter mode — ready to run.
Don't wrestle with hundreds of pounds of wet sand. Let us do the heavy lifting and get your water sparkling again.
