Propane Sizing & Performance Guide

Propane heaters are highly effective for rapid heating, especially for spas. Use the chart below to estimate your Heat-Up Time based on your pool's surface area.

Pool Surface Area 150k BTU 250k BTU 400k BTU
300 sq. ft. 1.25°F rise / hr 2.0°F rise / hr 3.2°F rise / hr
500 sq. ft. 0.75°F rise / hr 1.2°F rise / hr 2.0°F rise / hr
800 sq. ft. Not Recommended 0.75°F rise / hr 1.25°F rise / hr
1,000+ sq. ft. Not Recommended Not Recommended 1.0°F rise / hr

Pro Tip: If you are heating a spa, the 400k BTU model is our top recommendation. It can heat a standard 500-gallon spa by 30°F in roughly 18–20 minutes, compared to nearly an hour for the 150k model.

Installation & Warranty Information

Propane Specific Installation

  • Gas Pressure: Propane requires a specific manifold pressure (typically 10" W.C.). Ensure your propane provider installs the correct two-stage regulator system to maintain consistent flow.

  • Indoor Use: If installing in a shed or indoor equipment room, you must use a Hayward-approved indoor vent kit (sold separately).

  • Professional Required: To maintain safety and the manufacturer's warranty, a licensed gas professional must perform the connection and initial fire-up.

Warranty Coverage

  • Standard Warranty: 1-Year Limited Warranty on parts and labor.

  • Expert Line: Select models installed by a certified pool professional may qualify for an extended 3-Year Parts-Only warranty.

  • Important: Failure to have the unit installed by a licensed technician may void the labor portion of the warranty. Always keep your installation receipt and register your heater with Hayward within 60 days.
