D.E. Filter Media — 25 lb. Bag Diatomaceous Earth Filter Powder — 25 lbs.

The media that makes D.E. filtration work. Our all-natural Diatomaceous Earth filter powder coats your filter grids with a microscopic, porous layer that captures particles as small as 2–5 microns — removing the fine debris, pollen, and contaminants that sand and cartridge filters let pass right through. Works with all D.E. pool and spa filter systems.

How D.E. Powder Works

Diatomaceous Earth is the fossilized remains of microscopic aquatic organisms called diatoms. Each particle has a naturally porous, sponge-like structure that creates an incredibly fine physical barrier when coated onto your filter grids. Water passes through freely while particles as small as 2–5 microns — including fine pollen, algae spores, and certain bacteria — are trapped in the powder layer and held until the next backwash cycle removes them.

📏 Measuring D.E. Without a Scale: 1 lb. of D.E. powder is roughly equal to a standard 1 lb. coffee can full, or two heaping half-pound D.E. scoops. When in doubt, measure slightly under rather than over — too much powder can cause grids to bridge together, reducing filtration efficiency.
How to Apply D.E. Powder
1

Backwash First

Always backwash the filter to flush out old, spent powder before adding a fresh charge.

2

Mix a Slurry

In a bucket, combine the correct amount of D.E. powder with pool water to make a thin, creamy mixture — prevents clumping in the skimmer.

3

Add via Skimmer

With the pump running on Filter, slowly pour the slurry into the skimmer closest to the filter. Never add dry powder directly.

4

Check Pressure

Filter pressure should rise to the normal operating range (typically 10–15 psi) once the grids are fully coated and the system is running clean.

⚠️ Wear a Dust Mask When Handling Dry D.E. Powder. Dry Diatomaceous Earth is a fine silica powder — inhaling it is a health risk. Always wear a dust mask when scooping or pouring dry D.E. Mix into a slurry before adding to the system and avoid working in windy conditions where powder can become airborne. Store unused D.E. in a sealed container in a dry location.
💡 Pro Tip — Don't Over-Charge the Filter. Adding too much D.E. powder at once can cause "bridging" — where the powder packs so densely between grids that flow is restricted and filtration efficiency drops. Always add the recharge amount (not the full charge) after a routine backwash. Only use the full charge amount when starting fresh with clean, completely dried grids after a full teardown.
